News@lemmy.world•US air travelers without REAL IDs will be charged a $45 fee
4·3 days agoSure, if the no fly list was made by putting evidence in front of a judge. It’s not though, people end up on there without being in legal trouble all the time. It can and has been used for political ends, and the lack of transparency makes it effectively useless.

4·4 days agoWho makes that list? The same group of people labeling antifa as terrorists? If a person has no weapons and still is “too dangerous” to be on a plane, why are they not in jail?
ID isn’t making anything more secure in the context of the airport, it’s just surveillance and another way to limit/punish people extrajudicially.

News@lemmy.world•Pete Hegseth told US soldiers in Iraq to ignore legal advice on rules of engagement
611·4 days agoHere’s my thing with the sudden outcry about the double tap: why is this the breaking point? These motherfuckers have been blowing up boats at random on allegations of drug trafficking, but has anyone actually seen a single shred of evidence to back that up? The double tap is horrible in the context of a legitimate military strike, but there hasn’t been anything to show that these are even valid military targets. Even if they were carrying drugs, that’s not a crime that carries a death penalty anywhere but the worst fascist backwaters of the world.
This entire thing reeks of hegseth just wanting to kill people on the flimsiest of rationalizations, and even with a blatant war crime, he’s being allowed to.

9·4 days agoThey may have just used force to take the planes, but regulations regarding cockpit security were completely revolutionized after 9/11. That same tactic should not work today. Hell, even having a weapon doesn’t really make a hijacking more likely.
The problem was insecure cockpits, not that the authorities didn’t know the identities of the people onboard. There is no actual proven security reason for the TSA collecting this information.

66·5 days agoLike someone else said in a different post yesterday: anything beyond checking that I don’t have weapons or some other danger to the flight is completely unnecessary. There is no reason that the TSA needs to verify identity for flights.

1·11 days agoJust because a subset get arrested and convicted doesn’t mean that justice is being done across the board. Until the highest levels of govt see actual consequences for breaking the laws that they weaponize against their enemies, the justice system has failed.
With great power comes great responsibility, and abusing that power and neglecting their responsibility could have more severe punishment than the same crime committed by someone not in a position of power.

0·11 days agoSo fucking arrest her. If a judge tells me explicitly not to do something and I do it anyway, I go to jail for contempt. Why should the people in power have fewer consequences?

News@lemmy.world•Man detained by ICE found dead, hanging with hands and feet tied—attorney
1·17 days agoTW: suicide???
An autopsy report seen by Newsweek showed Ge was found tied with a bedsheet, with linens around his wrists and ankles in what the report described as a “hog-tied” position. The medical examiner noted that there had been other reported incidents of people who had hung themselves having done something similar, and that there were no obvious defense wounds.
Am I missing something here? How does someone hogtie themselves and then hang themselves? How is this being considered a suicide? Am I on crazy pills?

Late Stage Capitalism@lemmy.world•Ending world hunger costs less than 1% of military spending

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft AI CEO pushes back against critics after recent Windows AI backlash — "the fact that people are unimpressed ... is mindblowing to me"English
1·17 days agoMicrosoft is truly the king of putting out a product that no one wanted or asked for, then wondering why no one wants it. I’m sure they will soon begin the second phase of any Microsoft product: spending a small country’s GDP marketing it to try to get people to use it, despite it being prominently displayed on approximately 5 billion operating systems already.
A tried and true strategy to piss through more money than god to justify spending more money than god building the thing that no one wants. Looking at you, IE and edge.
But it doesn’t, because being on that list doesn’t actually have any specific requirements.
