My personal opinion is that Rimu doesn’t think b he’s trying to become king of the fediverse. I think he sees himself as a progressive fighting back against ideas, people, and movements that threaten his idea of progress. He likes that blog post so much because it positions the free and voluntary association inherent to federation as a right wing idea, something that needs order imposed upon it by a liberal democratic institution (“like the UN”). If it’s right wing to be decentralized, him trying to create a centralized authority is left wing.
I’m of the opinion that people usually believe what they say, and Rimu is no different. Why else would he share such an embarrassing article thinking it makes some convincing point? His thinking is liberal to the core, and he does not understand paradigms without centralized authority regulating behavior. It’s no wonder he doesn’t like the anarchist instances.
At the same time, belief that you aren’t power grabbing does not prevent someone from power grabbing. I don’t think Rimu will give up in the long run. Even if this episode is a loss that does more to lose allies than gain them, he is still gonna keep doing what he has been doing. He can’t use piefed to mandate his philosophy on moderation without alienating more people. He’ll never get his idea of a fediverse UN off the ground, both with how he’s acted and because many instances would never agree to something like it. If he properly reads the room, he’ll be quiet and wait for some better opportunity for mass defederation to show up. Either that or he’ll thrash around and create even more problems for himself.

Rimu, this is your third time in a week starting shit with db0 admins. None of what you’ve done recently has inspired any confidence from me in you or your projects. Given the side you picked during the recent lemmy.world drama, your posts come across more like hitpieces than well thought out complaints.
Also, wtf is up with you calling the entire idea of decentralization into question? Internet services require resources to run, and the barrier to entry for hosting an instance is relatively low. It’s absurd to call instances feudal fiefdoms when anybody with a bit of time and disposable income can theoretically set one up. What is the alternative, all those “fiefdoms” needing to report to a monarch who will only use their power to protect marginalized groups from bigotry(trust me bro)?
What makes it especially egregious is that you aren’t simply a user or even an instance admin, but the head developer of an entire section of the fediverse. You are not a neutral party arguing ideals, you are a person who could theoretically try to crown yourself king. You focusing so much of your efforts on attacking instances that you have ideological problems with is worrying.
I wouldn’t trust an admin like that to protect me from bigotry on their server, nor would I want them to dictate moderation for instances on their platform. Since you seem so keen on highlighting how your instance bans fewer people than others, how could I trust you to not mandate tolerance of a “diversity of opinions” like another notable instance that gives fewer bans?

If that was all rimu was complaining about, I’d understand. Unfortunately, he has a more ideological motivation behind this post than simply calling out AI. If letting users decide for themselves if they like this style of moderation was all he was advocating for, then why is he promoting the idea of centralizing decentralized platforms?
I am unconvinced that this particular use of an LLM for moderation is really that helpful. However, I doubt this is the only motivation behind this post.

The Democrats are controlled opposition, more at 11.

At this point I’m convinced Trump thinks he can win by dragging the gulf states into the war. What a mess.

Seriously though, if this doesn’t get a lot of people up in arms, nothing will improve for generations. If people accept tyranny, they will continue to get tyranny. Simple as.

It’s true. Much of the evil shit Trump does was done under liberalism where it was fairly popular. Christian Nationalists, Americans imperialists, bigots, and bloodthirsty capitalists were able to accomplish their goals within the system. They could get enough of what they wanted at the ballot box because their views had enough popularity to sustain it.
However, as neoliberalism eroded the middle class, as civil rights for minorities became more popular, as there was less support for war and supporting authoritarian allies, as people turned away from churches, the right knew there would come a day when they could no longer win through playing the liberal democratic game. They knew that if they waited long enough, left wing populism would usher in either a progressive era of labor reforms, or even more radical changes that would fundamentally threaten their power.
Under Trump, their goals are either to make their ideas popular, or take away any of the levers of control that regular people could use to stop them. The bigots and the Christians can use the billionaire media and newfound kingdom to enforce their dogma from the top down. Deport enough migrants, create enough anti trans laws, and suppress enough open discussions of sex through payment processors that much of it will become normalized. The billionaires can use those helpful idiots to take away the ballot box as an option and make the hollowed out husk of the government so broken and impotent that any liberal efforts to restrain them will be fruitless. Even the imperialists win because America’s lost ground to China will galvanize future liberals into being more anti communist and cruel in promoting national self interest.
Liberalism may have died, but it’s fully responsible for its own demise. It always had a fascist contingent that used the republicanism liberal ideology afforded to accomplish their own goals.

I fundamentally do not trust any Republican Congress member speaking out to not be controlled opposition, or serving some of the few evil billionaires who didn’t personally hang with Epstein.

Never. He’ll die before Americans do anything

This is Lemmy. You can say pedophile. You can swear. You can call spades a spade without doing wrongspeak that censors you from the algorithm.

I didn’t realize right wingers actively thought of San Francisco as a hellhole. I’ve heard it of Portland and Los Angeles, but never of the Bay area. I thought people imagined that all the coastal elites were from there.

And the people who ARE irresponsibly delaying it and softening it and dragging their feet about it, I think, maybe actually want it to succeed.
Like you said, don’t say it in a milquetoast way. The corporate owned media aren’t maybe doing interference for fascism, they are. They don’t want to cause panic because that will hurt shareholder interests and make it harder for the rich to avoid the public’s wrath for backing fascism.
The liberal establishment is also not being honest about how fucked things are because they don’t want to admit they have no power anymore. Liberalism is dead and can only be rebuilt, not saved. They don’t want to admit that it’s dead because that might actually cause people to want to fix the problems that let this happen in the first place. At a fundamental level, they don’t want to recognize that the myth of the American dream is what led to Trump. They don’t want to admit that an ideology of privatization and free markets was the deathcult all the commies and anarchists told them it was.
America will never move forward until it is humbled; until the myths of American exceptionalism are dead and buried. The post Trump era will not be recovery unless people reject the desire to return to the past.

With a corprocrat in charge, the republic will be pushed towards collapse and the same violent thugs working for ICE will be cracking skulls before long. They will doom America to fascism or civil war, and the only way you will ever get stability lasting more than a few years is by taking control from them.
Trump will never leave office alive, so give up on an election against him. When there is a choice, you’ll be voting for a JD Vance style Republican who is actually the puppet people seem to think Trump is, or you’ll be voting for a Democrat. If that Democrat is a coastal elite who was only rejected by the fascists because Trump didn’t like him, you’ve already lost. The Democrat will have a better chance in the general regardless, so it’s primary or bust.
Oh yeah, you also need progressives to dominate in 2022 and 2024 down ballot, while the rich only need a king loyal to their corruption.

You’re definitely correct about a lot of this, but your biggest mistake lies in underestimating Trump. He will leave in a body bag, no matter how much the general populace or even the wealthy elites dislike him. The violent thugs and Christian nationalists fully buy into the strength he projects, and they will not dispose him for the elites. No election will unseat him, as he plans on rigging the elections fully by 2028 whether he lives that long or not.
A period of elites trying to establish regional divisions and a breakup of the union will come, but not until Trump is dead. This is especially true when you consider how interwoven the military is at a national level. There are no regional divisions, and so there will be no breakup until the military is more thoroughly weakened and corrupted at an interpersonal level. A sudden power vacuum and disillusionment with Trump’s administration by everyone sets the best stage for them to take control.

I don’t have high hopes that this will be anything more than a blip for him. Trump’s platitudes will be more than enough to reign in most of his base, and only a few that actually wake up.
At the same time, it’s not that this doesn’t help. The majority will turn against Trump eventually and the sooner the better. The question is whether they’ll do anything about it before he’s gone, and whether they won’t just follow the next king loyally.

Trump is fundamentally different from Putin. Putin wants to restore the empire Russia lost with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Trump wants to bully and power trip, but doesn’t want an all out war. After he realized attacking Iran might lead to a more protracted war, he immediately tried to deescalate. Lucky for him Iran has big internal issues and didn’t really want more problems, but other targets might not back down so easily.
This isn’t to say he won’t attack Greenland, but it is less likely than most of Latin American. If Europe doesn’t do anything meaningful to beef up their defenses, he might do it. However, he wouldn’t want a war of attrition against a modern military, but an overwhelming show of force with no clear goal beyond death an mayhem. His strategy is to beat smaller nations until they call him God and bend the knee. He’s a bully, not a conquer.
What will be more scary is if he dies in the middle of escalating wars. JD Vance is a weakling who will easily fold to the rabid zealots who might actually want expensive conquest. They might suspend elections and start forever wars to keep power until they collapse under their own weight.

Bunker up and show strength. Make it clear a war won’t be easy, and he’ll go after weaker nations.
