This isn’t accurate. The European empires were built on mercantilism. The increase in production capacity during the industrial revolution led to the deprecation of mercantilism and the dawn of capitalism. Slavery was antithetical to capitalism as it represented fixed costs in a wildly boom-bust economy. Why pay to feed and house slaves when you can hire and fire workers at need, charge them rent and sell them food?
