After her son died in a car crash, Andrea Mauk says she returned home to discover that parts of his body had been removed as what she describes as an unauthorized anatomical gift.

Mauk says she was not contacted by the organ procurement organization before the donations occurred and later learned that tissue and other anatomical gifts from her son had been sent to organizations outside the United States.

Now, she is calling for greater transparency and informed consent in the organ and tissue donation system.

Her story comes as the federal government takes action against Network for Hope, an organ procurement organization serving Kentucky and parts of neighboring states, following reviews that identified patient safety failures.

Mauk is advocating for what she calls “Damon’s Law,” which she says would strengthen informed consent requirements and address how donated tissue can be transferred to for-profit companies.
