It’s keeping the drawings / spreadsheets / etc. up to date, to know what changes are required, that I’m thinking about.

With multiple switches, VLANs, subnets, etc and I want to add an IoT device somewhere physically convenient, then maybe I now need to trunk the IoT VLAN through multiple devices from the Wifi AP PoE switch, update firewall rules, because this is the 1st device on that physical segment, etc… and then update the drawings afterwards.

Now that’s worth automating.

I’m looking for a map, not a calculator.

I don’t have any AI running, hence just thinking of using public LLMs to create a drawing, but maybe this can interact with uptime kuma (for example) and tell me more about what just broke…

What’s the benefit over Ansible?

Most of my home is setup (& maintained) via Ansible (I have a few Pi Zeros scattered around the place with the same monitoring setup installed) but I’ve not found a nice solution to doing setup locally, then reproducing on Ansible, then testing, then refining… if there’s a shortcut to that I’d be interested!

Consider your perfect settings as the part you want to keep (as well as all your documents etc, of course), but the OS will change.

Tomorrow you’ll do an update and 2 applications and 10 libraries are now newer… so you probably don’t want to store a “golden image” for too long without redoing it to consider all the updates.

Now… with that situation in mind, it’s generally easier to just do a clean install of the distro and reapply your settings.

So, depending on what you’ve setup, installed, tweaked & configured, saving that can be done with config files in /etc and /home and maybe a 1-liner for applications to install.

That will be smaller and more easily reproducable on all your hardware (and maybe some VMs)

How you do that depends on what you’ve changed and your skills… maybe bash, maybe ansible, maybe just copying files - whatever makes sense to you.

TBH, I think everyone’s playing with the new thing and a bunch of people will just move on to the next big thing (augmented 3d post-realism AI?)

Then, it’ll settle down into decent workflows and become more organised… it’ll just be painful until that happens.

And at the rate they’re finding the bugs, they’ll all be found by the end of the year.

Get 2 devices, set them up the same and put 1 in a cupboard.

When you make a change / update and / or the hardware fails, then you can still recover.

Personally I have a Fritz router in bridge / pass through mode, then a pfSense firewall - basically a low-ish power microATX (I think) PC - which does all my adblocking and DNS as well as reverse proxy for home assistant, etc.

Yep, repo packages are going to be fairly good except for watering hole attacks, but PDFs and other documents could be a potential source of malware that anti-malware software would - potentially - protect the user.

I had to modify the wiring in a - fairly new - tractor once.

I opened up an inspection panel and found a pair of pliers in there, used them to fix the wiring and took them out.

I gained a tool and fixed an annoying rattle too.

If you’re not usng it for your own purposes, I doubt you’ll do what a bunch of strangers on Lemmy will tell you to do.

It needs to be running, either in your possession, or someone else’s, so sell it and make some profit from the recent price rises. Put a minimum sell price on ebay and it’ll go eventually.

Don’t unleash your army of clankers (I believe the formal term is ‘AI agents’) on this project; it’s already happening to many open source projects lately, and this one has just been revived. It doesn’t need to be inundated with hallucinations and pointless fixes.

The maintainers also request that anyone opening a pull request for a bug fix show a way to reproduce the problem first.

I use LightDM on my daily driver and hadn’t noticed it hadn’t received any updates, but yep, it’s there in this morning’s batch, nice.

That’ll play subfolders, randomly and with normalisation… although I’ve not really used the normalisation much, just played with it a few times when yoochoob downloads were all mismatched.

Yeah, I’m not a subscriber - I don’t have a YT account - but if I did, I’d be down voting and writing comments like “so… where’s the content from your click bait thumbnail?” 😉
