Just like the good ol’ days in the Bronze Age.

Don’t look at the Debian website.

I chided someone earlier today for what I thought was a neckbeard superiority complex. It was a cheap shot. It’s a lot better than it used to be. The nerds tolerate you if you use Mint.

I’m Happy either way. That code is the compose for the Firefox container I use. Lemmy just didn’t like my formatting.

Can someone help a geezer out? I’ve stepped away (or gotten permabanned) from all social media except for this one. I barely understand the fediverse. If I don’t plan on starting my own lemmy or mastodon community and literally nobody cares I exist, is there a benefit for me to run a fedi server? Would it help the cause in some way?

On the plus side, you don’t have to m----r the goats to get your money back.

Isn’t EA the company recently making headlines for being a power and money-hungry greed machine pushing the inshittification of the digital world and subscription-based life?
Gosh it sucks when someone with more leverage institutes unreasonable and unprecedented restrictions and demands, huh? The narcissism mind-virus is insane.

The female sims will have a fulfilling existence, just limited to the confines of their home and subject to their husband’s authority. /s

Weird. I think they like them a lot more than they let on (sandy sexy secrets).

To be fair to your point, windows does seem to be biased toward HP products - I have a really nice Canon $100 laser printer that makes any HP look like dogvomit, and windows is awfully forgetful, acting like they haven’t met on the rare occasions I have to use it.

That is literally impossible to say, as you said, “hostile vendors” and all. I’ve had a chance to think about it, and I’m not sure they’re hostile, probably just lazy. At any rate, I sense some willful blindness on your part; exactly the kind of thing I was saying holds back progress. You type some terse retort and push your keyboard away, satisfied you’ve told some stupid normie off- I’m not the one on the wrong side of the philosophical fence here, and my argument is not unique or new.

Those are good points, and accurate. I think my luck may just suck. I would be so happy to leave Nepo-baby Gates and his spyware company in the 20th century where it belongs.

My self-hosted services run on a repurposed thinkstation with a headless Debian install.
I had a Mint VM I loaded up with stuff - bottles, etc. It was all going pretty well, the install was almost as big as winblows which I wasn’t excited about, but I really like Mint. I had a Linux Lite VM i was using for a separate secure connection to my work vnc. I didn’t want my personal computer being legally discoverable just because I used it to connect to the mothership. On both of those, I wasn’t doing a lot of sharing, printing, or other intermediate or hardware tasks.
For what I was doing, it worked pretty mostly fine. There was always a level of tinkering that is beyond what a normie would be willing or able to do. I do get tired of having to manually enter the commands to make the distro display correctly on my ultrawide monitor, but it is understandable.
I don’t hate Linux. I like it. It has gotten a lot better in the last 20 years; I’ve watched it happen. There are just some things that remain frustrating, especially since I’m too dumb to remember CLI along with all the other things I know.

print something on a piece of paper.

It didn’t take long for having to buy 3 or 4 streaming services to replace cable became more expensive than cable.
Anyway, I have a poopdeck to scrub and a wooden leg to polish.

They might get interested if people start talking about Epstein again.

Sounds like a company that somehow has no boomers dragging it down.

This is happening because Linux is the default OS for servers, robots, machines, etc., it just sucks balls for normie personal computing, so they’ll use Winblows for the basic stuff, and WSL for the server-centric tasks.
Ubuntu can make it as toddler-centric as it wants, it won’t change the fact that eventually a person will find a thing their machine won’t do without an on-staff geek.
If they have heart, they’ll try chasing the black screen into the depths of google oblivion or use AI for infinitely recirculating bad advice. It’s ironic that a LLM running on a Linux server can’t fix Linux.
Most people will punt and go back to Microsucks which grows more evil and abusive every day.
I’m just mad I can’t get any of my file-management containers to work properly.

Firstly, I use linux for self hosting, and have a love-hate relationship for any other purpose. I’ve been trying to make the full transition since about 2009(?) and always end up back on the spyware-riddled Microswamp ad-delivery system.
I’m going to get downvoted for saying this, but if Linux could make hardware tasks as easy as Microsoft, namely printing, Windows would be a thing of the past.
I could put Mint on my 72 y.o.mom’s computer and she probably wouldn’t notice the difference until she had to do something dealing with hardware (connect a camera, or god forbid, print something). inb4 just use cups - My mom doesn’t gasf about dependencies, chown, and chasing terminal errors for 6 hours to print an agenda for the ladies’ church meeting and then have it break itself the next day. This is why it fails. Linux purists who don’t care that people don’t have time for CLI will disagree, and that is precisely what keeps things in the current state.
I love GIMP, regardless of UI.
