It’s pretty inconsistent, depends on what the people running the site are doing. Seems like the Palestine comm and other stuff that is really consistently popular on both sides for years is what works reliably. Plus it depends on Mastodon fork. Misskey would have no problem federating with Lemmy if not for one tiny bug, but the forks like Sharkey and Iceshrimp already solved that. It’s just that nobody except for me and like 37 other people know they exist.

You mentioned K/Mbin and I honestly find it a bit distasteful, as representing what should really be the same kind of post-reply format (the retweet accounts represent comms or rss feeds etc perfectly, I even use them for scraping imageboards and Telegram, these sites may have different UI but they’re almost the same format) in a whole separate thing just feels really clunky and the magazines are weird—sorry if that makes you mad because it really fits your workflow. Wish there was just more basic consistency between the platforms since users could share information regardless of whether they have Twitter or Reddit brain 😁

Mainly I wish stuff like a.gup .pe worked better *lmao this already shut down nevermind RIP it was basically a platform-agnostic way to create groups similar to lemmy’s communities, and they appeared on here that way

  • I can agree with much of that. I’ve seen people do this whole song and dance with autism, similar to saying people don’t have ADHD because they’re not annoying enough. Then they find out that autism is likely part of a cluster of mutations that always occur with certain deeply-disabiling genetic disorders, but can also stand alone. Self-diagnosis by people left out in the cold should not be necessary. A good treatment system needs to evolve to fit patients’ needs not the inverse lol

It’s incredible how much ActivityPub sabotages itself. This author speaks on the deliberately dysfunctional aspects of Mastodon as being a result of “open source software having to suck” when in fact the devs here chose to make it suck because they decided it was better, like removing quote tweets etc. Misskey variants do all this stuff perfectly fine, far more features than Twitter actually, although the base version is incredibly buggy and inhabited by pedophiles. There is no reason why Lemmy and its forks can’t connect to these sites either. People are just incredibly confused on here and do not see their own potential.

Big fan of Movim by the way.

  • I’m seeing a lot of people here being supportive of individuals with disabilities and that’s awesome because ability is a temporary condition. We come into this world disabled and most of us leave it disabled. That being said, when you look at the number of Ivy League students in America who have these disabilities, it is very, very questionable for to say it is not being over diagnosed. Overall they’re probably trying to do a good thing, but there is a huge amount of abuse in this system and that actually leads to disabled people being overlooked and instead pharma companies just pursue a profit. Over diagnosis leads to under diagnosis as unintuitive as that sounds.

  • Endometriosis is not something that shares symptoms which can be caused by kids being chronically under slept AFAIK. U.S. psychiatrists and therapists are completely incompetent and will not check for basic sleep issues and instead just drug kids. I’m all for finding comprehensive treatment for executive dysfunction of all kinds, but I just don’t think methylphenidate and amphetamines etcetera are suitable for as many situations as believed.

  • Never cared for the way this fellow tries to argue that everything is too difficult to be useful. I’ve gotten plenty of friends and family on XMPP and the clients that don’t have encryption on by default are easy to remember. Really blowing it out of proportion.

Honestly, what do security researchers like this even know about normal people? They sit through all kinds of inconveniences to use Facebook. This is a thought experiment.

Some of these are valid criticisms, of course, a lot of XMPP stuff feels like it from the 2010s. It’s still the only real option. Matrix client or server is bloated garbage, theu moved server fixes into a walled garden, its development is dependent on funding from the USA National Endowment for Democracy technology fund. Signal has similar funding issues and is very shady with its centralization, trust issues, demanding phone numbers. Sets users up to leak all kinds of stuff in notifications like Matrix.

The strange insistence that only Signal meets their requirements makes me skeptical, as does the way they have operated in Github threads. They seem like an emotional nightmare to work with.
