See, by making sure it only stays legal for medical use, they can ensure that every medical state gets to keep its racket of licensing and doctor consultations. In recreational states, all the tax money just goes back to the taxpayer in the form of roads programs, educational programs, etc. The last thing any Republican would ever do was willingly fund something that helped other people, unless those other people were their billionaire donors.

This change does not legalize marijuana for recreational use but allows for more research. That’s it. It does nothing as far as legalization goes. Just recognizes there’s medicinal uses.

A broken rapist, racist, treasonous calendar is right once a year (or maybe once a decade).

Its doesn’t undo a decade-long campaign to dismantle the country for profit and power. But it’s nice that he finally did something positive.

Anyways, remember when he said the left would suddenly be against legalizing weed once he supported it, and everyone collectively said “fucking legalize it”?

      he isn’t legalizing it:

The move doesn’t legalize marijuana, but the reclassification would allow the FDA to study it for medical purposes.

and, he’s still a wrong calendar:

He also indicated he would not be open to legalizing cannabis for recreational use. “It’s never safe to use powerful controlled substances in a recreational manner,” he said.

i also like the circular logic of saying it’s not safe because it’s a, “controlled substance”…

This reminds me of an anti-drug story written on some government website (DEA? ONDCP?) I read years ago about a teenager who was a star athlete and straight-A student but got caught smoking weed and then got expelled and lost a scholarship or some such. I found it quite absurd considering this kid was doing so well “despite” using weed and every single negative aspect they listed was something being imposed by some third party as a form of punishment and had nothing to do with the substance use itself. Their messaging was basically “we’ll ruin your life in order to protect you from yourself” and it makes me sad to think that this shitty ass logic works on so many people.

my medical marijuana doctor told me that jail was so incredibly bad for your health that a mj recommendation was his obligation under the Hippocratic Oath

Oh, I know he’s not legalizing it. Just commenting on how he said he would in the first term.

It is the tiniest step in the right direction to reclassify.

He also indicated he would not be open to legalizing cannabis for recreational use. “It’s never safe to use powerful controlled substances in a recreational manner,” he said.

        And 5 steps back.

“He also indicated he would not be open to legalizing cannabis for recreational use.” So I guess this is good but what is it really doing if they are never going to legalize it. Hopefully allows for some more conservative states to have an easier path to medicinal or recreational marijuana.

So, good news and I’m glad that they did it. Cannabis should not be illegal, and though this doesn’t fix that, having it being Schedule I was insanity and totally out-of-step with reality. I’m sure that Trump will be getting greased by the weed lobby, but in the end of the day, this is something that needed to happen.

The executive order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to conclude the formal rescheduling process, which has been going on for more than a year, and move to publish a final rule that would reclassify cannabis.

Effectively all this is doing is putting Trump’s name on a process that was started by Biden in 2022.

Looking at just the politics of it, the Democrats absolutely fucked up by teeing this up for Trump when they could have just done it themselves. Weed legalization is popular and it’s already been happening across the country for over a decade. Even if you don’t think it’s totally fucked up how cannabis is treated as a Schedule I substance, it’s really not hard to see which way the wind is blowing on this politically.

This should have been something that Biden did before leaving office, whether the reclassification process was over or not. Instead they wrapped it up in a nice little gift box and tied a little bow around it before handing it to Trump. This is the type of thing that drives your voters and supporters fucking insane, Democrats.

Sounds like doctors would probably be able to prescribe nationwide if this happens, right?

Which won’t change anything for most of the US. I think this will only impact Idaho, Wyoming, Kansas, and South Carolina. Everyone else has some sort of legalized availability now.

dems could have had an easy win doing this but instead they fucked around and handed it to Trump, as usual. its even the small, “incremental” kind of progress they love; a tiny, almost imperceptible step that gives them something to point to when asked why they never accomplish any of their policy goals.
