She’s really great. She’s running for congress in Illinois. She has been at all the ice protests.

Kat Abughazaleh is running for House District Illinois-09

I checked her website and she seems to have a decent approach to most things. Of course the website is like all candidate websites. “Give me money!” buttons all over the place.

She’s asking for money from constituents, not from corporations. Money is a requirement to get your name out there so enough people are aware of you enough to vote for you. I don’t see how asking for money is a criticism. I give money to politicians whose platforms I agree with.

One of the interesting tactics she’s been using in her campaign is spending donated funds to help the residents of the district. I don’t know how much she spends on traditional campaign ads and consultants, but it’s less than the 100% most do and she’s held events that were just volunteering for public benefit.

I hope she has a campaign finance lawyer. Because she’s not a Republican, the FEC may audit her campaign, and there’s are lots of rules about how campaign funds can be spent.

In her video announcing it she said she consulted with her lawyer and it’s not actually illegal to spend donations on doing good things rather than just pissing billions of dollars away every election. The key is that it can’t be conditioned on voting.

Interesting. I’ve definitely heard of politicians getting in trouble for using campaign donations for something not directly tied to the next election.

I’m certainly happy to hear that she’s doing it.
