The use of administrative subpoenas, which are not subject to judicial oversight, are used to demand a wealth of information from tech companies, including the owners of anonymous online accounts documenting ICE operations.
Honestly I’m convinced these news stories are just for show to bend the average person’s mind to believe they don’t already have all your digital data.
No one should feel safe using any of the top brand tech. …and sadly you can’t feel safe using the smaller companies either.
The fact a war hasn’t started already is kind of mind blowing and really shows the American spirit of freedom is all bullshit. No one wants to admit reality they just want to continue this odd half-life escapist lifestyle that gets marketed to them by the people that use them.
I would argue you can since I don’t know any instance that does do data collection like The big name corporations do. And if we are talking web server seizure that would only give the Feds the data stored on that particular server.
So say the Feds get ahold of your instance server. Then the Feds only have your instance information as opposed to all of Lemmy or the Fediverse.
Consequentially the other Instances probably would quickly degenerate from the Fed seized instance because of the security risks.
Things can also improve if you made sure to have a dead switch installed on the instance and back ups stored outside of the Feds reach
If you have your own instance you have access to user comment and post history (even if deleted), voting history, IP address, and more for every other instance you’re federated with.
Access yes but not stored. Should my server defederate I don’t have that access. And that’s my argument, if an instance gets seized the others defederate, resulting in the seized instance isolated and only able to have any local data
I was watching this yesterday. She talks about the way the government pushes private companies to follow out their spying basically.
We already gave out freedom and rights away a long time ago. Everything is just for show.

You definitely can’t feel safe using Lemmy either

Lemmy is by no means privacy focused.
