I think the main problem of Ubuntu is GNOME. After version 2 it became useless, like a kid’s toy.
While I personally can’t stand GNOME these days, it’s not the problem here. It’s Canonical’s desire for Snaps, a notoriously less standardized (and mature) packaging format, to be used for literally everything in Ubuntu; they’re aiming for system components to use it in the nebulous ‘future’.
