    The only justifications for using flatpak are having a musl system or if the software has way too many dependencies. Use your package manager when possible, otherwise use an appimage, or find a way to get the .deb or .rpm working on your distro.

    if doomscrolling through Flathub is somehow distracting or occupying your attention too much, you can extend your /etc/hosts like this:

      Maybe but I did scroll and install/testing softwares for 3 hours, I also learn how to compile simpler software from sources that don’t have any build instruction because some of the stuff I found only available on flathub. There’s a few vibe coded softwares too despite Flathub banning ai generated code

      I think the meaning has shifted a bit (at least from my experience) to basically mean “spending an excessive amount of time on some digital content (usually rapidly switching from one piece to another)”.

      Of course this depends on the person I’m talking with but it seems to me that a lot of people are using it as I described above.

    No problem with Flathub, but FFS I wish so many projects would stop having all their releases and flatpaks or those damn snaps.

    If you’re going to do just one format why not AppImage? It is portable, easy to use, multiple ways to sandbox it, and newer versions have the option to create their own home directory so the files created stay with the AppImage for use on portable drives or between users on a shared partition.

      Appimage opens the way for downloading random bullshit from the internet windows style and I think it is harmful for the future of Linux.

      Nobody who thinks appimages are a good idea will use the automatic updater thingies. Just look at the number of windows users who never update their apps and do a surprised pikachu face when they get hacked. There are also tools for autoupdating windows apps but nobody except Linux users (who are aware of the importance of updates) use it.

      On windows, there is no such thing as abandonware because it is just called regular software. Old and broken programs never stop “working” as far as the user is concerned and then they blow up in their ass when the time comes. On Linux, there is no abandonware because you NEED to update everything if you wanna keep your system working.

      Idk appimages give me an ick.

        My ick comes from the centralized repositories, basically building app stores for Linux, and pushing them beyond a distro specific things that usually still have other options on top of the deb or rpm or whatever.

        With them fiddling around trying to invade every bit of privacy and us just barely escaping the California law with no idea if it will hold out for future ones I think any centralized source is a liability and should be avoided.

        Also, the systemd jackass throwing his own narcissit tech bro bullshit into it to bow down, lick the boot, and comply in advance is another real concern as most distros have moved to it from other init systems. There has to be enough fragmentation here for us to move away from fascist fuckery, and the ridiculous reliance on a single type of packaging isn’t good for being able to sidestep stupidity if/when it spread to the people in control of the codebase.

      I’ve got nothing against AppImages, but strong disagree there. Flatpaks (and also snaps, I guess) are easy to search for and easy to upgrade. Just add the repo and you’re done.

      In AppImages there is no built-in repository management or update machanism(?). At least I remember having to use some third-party tool to do all this, like “Gear” or whatever it’s name is, but they all felt very janky.

        They have the sync option to update without downloading the whole package again, GearLevel does this, but that’s a flatpak, there are several more options as well or just manual updates. Some of them even update themselves, if you trust the packager. And given how easy it is for random people to dump unofficial ports on Flathub I would check who made them there as closely as I do for my AppImages.

          I’ve run them with everything from AntiX to Nobara to Arch to Gentoo to…

          I do like the granular Android-like controls for flatpaks, using flatseal or something similar is almost idiot proof, so I’m not upset there are flatpaks… Only when there are just flatpaks.

    Yeah I also lose some minutes scrolling everytime I go to Flathub.

    AppImageHub isn’t that nice, I dunno why.
