Just remember IBM helped the nazis in Germany by producing a punch card system to track and exterminate Jews.

History may not repeat, but it often rhymes.

You’re avoiding a random a Chinese company founded in the 80ies because they bought the Thinkpad brand from IBM?

Just wondering why you’re singling them out like that. Especially if you want to avoid anyone that has anything to do with them. If we’re talking acquisitions from IBM, the largest owner of patents originally owned by IBM is Google (they bought around 2.5k). Companies that had significant dealings with IBM include Microsoft, which would probably not exist in its current form without the original contract from IBM to develop DOS. (Linux would also be quite different if the influence from RedHat, owned by IBM, was removed.) And pretty much every PC manufacturer who’s been in the business for long enough would have licensed IBM technologies at some point or at least copied them. Even though they failed to make money from licensing the original PC design or later inventions like USB memory sticks, IBM created a lot of computing basics such as DRAM.

Avoiding Lenovo kind of sounds like a random easy way out. They have much less influence. I’m not consciously avoiding them and still have nothing from them. They’re not difficult to avoid at all.

Sorry I’m not going to read your comment in its entirety as I’m watching a new DND campaign, and got a cat begging for attention.

I’m not singling them out. I avoid BMWs, VWs, and Fords for the same reason despite being a huge fan of all .

Edit: strange 30 plus of y’all are in favor of fascism…

Again with the easy choices though? It’s trivial to avoid a few car brands. So far you’re only listing companies people are likely to randomly not buy from anyway. When someone asked a question about something where it’s not as easy, you blocked them. You’re not avoiding Nazi collaborators, you’re just virtue signaling in the cheapest way possible.

Same reason I will never buy a car brand even loosely associated with evil. Because they chose a side, and it isn’t the one I’m on.

Edit: love how there is a not insignificant lemmy users who dislike this comment. Know I’m saying “fuck you” to you too.

Then it’s probably not a good idea to be on Lemmy. It’s written in Rust, which is a programming language funded by a lot of unapologetically evil big tech companies, like Microsoft and Google. It was also initially created by Mozilla, a company with heavy associations with Google and which has even become quite pro-AI.

I’d say using tools funded by evil counts as “loosely associated”.

basically every electronic product ever is assembled by slaves using minerals mined by other slaves

the only way to durably fix this is overthrowing capitalism, imperialism and neocolonialism.

Are you now avoiding all computers, including Lenovo, or retracting/clarifying your initial statement?

To me, a computer is a tool. In this modern age, we don’t stand a chance of fighting without these tools. Take the sword from your enemy and stab him with it.

            Lenovo is a good tool.

            Except their bloatware POS tablet.

Google is hosting a CBP app that uses facial recognition to identify immigrants, while simultaneously removing apps that report the location of ICE officials because Google sees ICE as a vulnerable group. “It is time to choose sides; fascism or morality? Big tech has made their choice.”

That’s not true at all. Some of the biggest protests in US history have happened as a result of this shit. People are fucking with ICE operations and courts are throwing out charges against those protestors on a daily basis.

And there’s a growing resistance building among current and former military members, but they’re keeping quiet about it because it’s really fucking stupid to make your resistance plans public knowledge.

It might not be happening fast enough for your liking, but the resistance is absolutely there.

Funny how you know, ICE isn’t going after the CEO of Microsoft or the CEO of Google, you know. I guess if you’re stupidly rich, you’re immune from deportation.

The CEO of Google ought to be ashamed.

Google was all about producing products people were excited about, from search that was useful to improving browsers and email and setting standards, they even started Let’s Encrypt which makes the web safer every day. They’ve contributed so much positive technology, and they were eager to try new things that inspired alternatives even as Google killed their own implementation.

Then they focused on cloud and found huge investments from Nazi regimes, they removed “don’t be evil”, and became evil.

It wasn’t just the fun perks at the office, googlers used to be excited about the work they do. Now they get fired for expressing concern about producing products for Nazis.

They’re a for-profit corporation. They will support whatever makes them money. There are no good or bad for-profit corporations. They only do exactly what they were designed to do. That being said, their employees and shareholders DO have a choice, and CAN be held responsible.
