Whose votes is he picking up here? The sort of people who want anti-trans bigotry in sports aren’t going to vote for him no matter which minorities he decides to chuck under the bus for traction.
He’s doing this because it’s who he always was, and now that he’s on the other side of the primary he doesn’t have to care.
There’s probably enough idiots in Texas that will vote for him because he is a Christian. It is Texas after all. I also think the question of fairness in sports may be a bit subjective and unfortunately not everyone knows the science behind it. We also don’t have much data in general. There’s also nuance, maybe someone is fine with it in middle school sports but not professional or something. It’s actually a somewhat interesting topic and I do understand people’s hesitation about it. I’m not going to count someone completely out over that one thing, honestly. Hell I would generally be against him simply because I don’t trust Christians, but compared to the alternative…whew.
I’m just so fucking tired of moving to the right one betrayal at a time. There’s always another vulnerable group that democrats consider disposable. Immigrants. Palestinians. Trans people. Poor people. Rail workers.
I’m sick of retreating. I want trans people to be accepted because I have loved ones who are trans. I have friends who are plural who society is never going to accept if we don’t get trans acceptance down first. I’m fed up with watching people I was enthusiastic about voting for deciding on my behalf that the Overton window encompasses too many vulnerable minorities and not enough bigots.
I feel like it’s not going to ever end, like there is no one willing to stand up for the powerless. That no one understands that appeasing fascists never gets you to a better place, no matter how much you call it incremental progress.
Obama said he was against gay marriage, then got it legalized. I think sometimes there is strategy in playing the game otherwise you’re stuck with a true fascist.
Might be cold comfort but I would prefer it takes a decade of crawling towards it rather than lose everything outright because someone made a strategic failure trying to win a red state. Just like Beto did with the guns. Let’s not demolish every chance every time.
You’d rather crawl towards fascism with small concessions from the ruling class to make you feel like you’re winning. Because it’s more comfortable for you, and you aren’t on the chopping block just yet.
First they came for the communists and all that… When you sacrifice all of us, we won’t be there to protect you when they come for you!

Talarico walking back his position didn’t convince a single bigot. They have not changed their attacks against him on this issue. I suspect that the attacks will intensify because he demonstrated a willingness to cave. But this will not be rewarded with their votes. Bigots will vote for the greater bigot every time.
Nah there’s definitely people that don’t mind trans people.at all but are uncomfortable with someone who was born a man playing in women’s sports. He’s not appealing to the hard right, he’s appealing to the middle ground people that live in a very conservative state. I am not saying I would do the same, but I get it.
I live in that very conservative state and foolishly thought that we finally had a candidate that didn’t give bigots’ framing surrounding vulnerable minorities credence.

The supreme court legalized it and no one has codified it. It’s on the chopping block just like Roe was.
I think that’s cold comfort to the sacrificial pawns.

I would like a reasonable chance of someone that isn’t a full on fascist piece of crap winning since there’s literally two choices.
There’s only two choices because of spineless people who consider genocide one of the options.

You cannot appease fascists.
